I think we would all like to think that it would be possible for one of us to lead an extraordinary life complete with a superhuman body. In our world today there is a huge fan base for superheros of every kind with their own set of superpowers. Fiction sometimes seems to blend over into reality and for those who look for it. Blessed Theresa is one such of these super-humans that I theorize blends the line of reality. Ignoring the religious stigmata for the purpose of narrowing my topic and briefly focusing on her diet, or lack thereof, for the time being. The Blessed Theresa was reported to have not eaten anything in last 37 years of her life and had not had a drop of water in the last 35 years of her life. As a college student this life sounds somewhat appealing, well maybe with one modification... I personally would trade in the perpetually sated apatite for a perpetual day, not having to sleep. On average everyone spends a third of their life in slumber, imagine how much more one could accomplish!
I'm not going to divulge whether or not I personally think if Blessed Theresa is a con artist or not. Rather I am just going to aim to say that Descartes' idea could shed some light here on how we perceive the issue. I would argue that Descartes' theory would be applied as follows. Looking at the devout followers and believers in miracles, and as a skeptic alike it's all about how they perceive the world. As the believer you would see Blessed Theresa as an incredibly religious person who, you would think that puts not importance of self but more on everyone else and God. Therefore Theresa was being graced by a closer connection with God and he was bestowing her a gift of being sustained on nothing but the communal hosts and wine, the body and blood of Jesus Christ. That would be enough evidence to them. Looking then at all the skeptics out there and examine how their perceptions differ. They would entirely look at the body's physiological needs and they would see that the body cannot physically sustain itself for 3 weeks let alone 35 years without food or water, therefore the Blessed Theresa must in fact be a con artist.
